Lesson 3: Who Is Your Avatar?

MODULE ONE - THE IDEA

Lesson 3

Who Is Your Avatar?

One thing you need to be thinking about when you write your book is who the ideal reader is for this book? That is, who would benefit from reading your book the most?

I know you might think, “Everyone would benefit from it!” However, a book for everyone, is likely to be a book for no one.

The more clear you can be about who this book is intended for, the more clear your audience of readers will be about it. Once you have that clarity, it will become easier to write to that audience.

Let’s say you are writing a book about Simple Habits to Save Time In Your Day. That seems great. But, for whom is your message? Is it for stay-at-home moms, for college freshmen, for working executives?

The lens matters and as many of my friends in the entrepreneurial world have said to me, the riches are in the niches. And, let’s face it, you want your book to sell.

BELOW IS AN EXAMPLE FROM MY BOOK, BESTSELLER BY BREAKFAST

Avatar: Jenny

Jenny is a mom, a wife, and a small business owner. She has run a small photography studio and has made a pretty good living at it, and has found time to balance her work life and personal life.

She lives in Asheville, NC. Jenny loves her community and finds small getaways with her husband to be among the favorite parts of her day-to-day life.

She works hard and is highly productive. Jenny has thought about using her knowledge about running a business and raising a family to write a book.

She is told often that she should share this with the world and often hosts small afternoon gatherings with her friends at her home. Jenny invites them to take their sandals off and walk in the grass for an impromptu dance party with glasses filled with refreshing lemonade.

She works hard and doesn’t take any unnecessary risks, but is not known to be over-calculating.

Jenny has no problem connecting with men, but more frequently sees them as peers because she is confident and has 4 brothers at home. She isn’t a tomboy and is just as feminine as her many friends. Still, she can throw a football with a perfect spiral.

Action Step:

  • Write a clear description of the avatar (audience) for your book. Write down what they are like, what they do in their free time. Get creative. Where do they shop? How do they think? What is their age or gender? What matters to them?
  • The description should be a short paragraph maybe 250-300 words. Don’t over do it. You are getting ready to start creating the content of your book and in the next lesson we will begin to formulate your big idea and create your titles and outline for your book.

Mind Node:

“A book written for everyone is a book written for no one.”
